Online and in person - Shrewsbury, Shropshire
I work with adults who self-dentify, or are diagnosed as autistic, and/or have ADHD. Together we explore unconscious masking and how it has lead to being uncertain of you truly are. Many who come ro see me, explore burnout, overwhelm, identity ans internalised ablism, and look to reflect upon who they are as neurodivergent person trying to survive the world not designed for them. I work in-person and online throughout the UK.
Through life, we can alter who we are to suit the needs of others. We can absorb many messages telling us how we think and feel are wrong. We learn to fit in by looking around us at what behaviours and characteristics are liked and accepted, and mirror these to fit in. But this goes against who we are, and so over time, we can become so far away from who we want to be. This can cause us so much stress and anxiety. I will help you untangle your thoughts and feelings and support you in establishing who you are, away from who you have learnt to be.
There is a difference between masking out of choice and masking unconsciously for survival.
I'm an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. I work with autistic and ADHD adults to support identifying learnt messages and separate them from who you really are, not who you have become. Through a Neuro-affirmative therapeutic lens, I support you in recognising and celebrating your differences while understanding the effect of social expectations and judgements on how you view those differences. You are the expert on you, but you may have just lost your voice.
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.” - Carl Rogers
I offer talking-based counselling, with an option of using creative methods and play. The environment is relaxed, and I have fidgets to hand. Sessions can be short-term, long-term and I work open-ended, with reflective honesty if I feel sessions are coming to a natural end.
I qualified as a counsellor in 2007. Since then I have continued my education and practice, to currently being a PhD student researching potential harm in counselling for autistic people.
I am a researcher on the experiences of autistic counsellors 10.1002/capr.12839 - the first in the UK - which advocates (loudly) for the recognition of autistic differences being strengths, and better representation and inclusion of autistic therapists.
I initially trained in the person-centred model and it forms the base for how I work. But throughout my career, I have also gained qualifications in CBT, DBT, Gestalt, Inner child work, internal family systems, and the use of creative methods. As an AuDHD person, I like to use my cognitive strengths, natural curiosity and deep sense of emotional empathy, to help clients explore and understand themselves at greater depths.
I also like to use psychoeducation, my own lived experience and counselling techniques through a neuro-affirmative lens to help you explore and celebrate your differences in a safe place with someone who understands and who has life experience.
I am Senior Accredited with NCPS Accredited with the BACP - However, my senior accreditation is currently being assessed
I have an enhanced DBS
